ibonekoen: (Joe Jonas in shadows)

Amelia Lansing was not my first love nor will she be my last, but she's easily the most important. Without her, I wouldn't be sitting here speaking with you today. You see, Amelia saved me. I don't mean saved in a Biblical way with baptism and being dunked in holy water and all that. Besides, holy water and vampires don't mix well at all.

No, I met Amelia on the first day I woke up as a vampire. She rescued me from being burned alive. My maker had a...how shall I say this? Accident. Yeah, sure, accident. Let's go with that. Anyway, he had an accident and ended up leaving me in the alleyway where he killed me. I woke up, had no clue what was going on, only that something was burning. Come to find out, that something burning was me.

Enter Amelia.

Unfortunately, Amelia can't be here to tell you her story because she died a number of years ago. I'll do my best to tell you what I know. She grew up in New York, and her parents died when she was young. She lived with her brother, but I can't say that I ever met him.

Amelia was a witch, and she helped me realize what had happened to me. She was kind enough to let me stay in her apartment until I got back on my feet, for which I'm forever grateful. I don't know what I would've done without her. Well, that's a lie. I would've been one crispy fried vampire.

You didn't see many redheads in those days -- gingers, I think, is the proper term. Well, I didn't see that many gingers anyway. That was something of a novelty for me, her red hair. Her eyes were as blue as the summer sky, and those lips... I died a virgin, but let me tell you, I didn't stay one for long.

Amelia brought me my first meal. I made the mistake of trying to eat a sandwich because I was starving. Without going into gross details, it didn't sit so well on my stomach. She informed me that vampires needed blood to survive and then she went off to get me some. Came back with some Coke bottles full of the stuff. To this day, I still don't know where she got the blood. Probably from a hospital or blood bank or something. At least, that's what I'm assuming.

She was also the first person to let me feed from her willingly. I ended up leaving her when I found my maker. Figured she'd shown me her hospitality long enough, and besides, there were a lot of other vampire things my maker needed to teach me that she just couldn't, no matter how hard she tried. I thought of her often in my travels though. My maker never lacked for company of the female persuasion (and sometimes male) and I'd be lying if I said I didn't accept their company too, but my heart belonged to Amelia and Amelia only.

I guess it should've been no surprised at all that Amelia had moved on with her life after I left, but I was floored when I returned to her ten years later and she refused to run away with me.

Amelia shook her head, the ginger curls bouncing around her face. "I can't, Joseph. I have a life here."

He didn't remember her hair being quite that long the last time he'd seen her, and for a few long moments, he watched the curls, mesmerized by their movements. Shaking himself out of his trance, he frowned. "You could have a life with me, Amelia."

She scoffed and gave a short, harsh laugh. "A life where you get to watch me grow old while you stay the same? That's no life at all, Joseph." She shook her head and moved away from him, gathering up books from a desk and tucking them against the crook of her elbow.

"I'd turn you." He stepped forward between her and the desk, blocking her access to the books and forcing her eyes to cut upward to his face. He reached out, cool fingers sliding over her cheekbone as he cupped her face in his palm. "Amelia, we could be together forever."

She stared at him for a few long minutes, blue eyes wide. Then she shook her head and took a step back, curling her arm tighter against her and hugging the books to her chest. "I can't, Joseph. I can't do this, not with you. I-" She took a deep breath and swallowed, taking another step back to put more distance between them.

He frowned as he let his hand drop away from her face. His fingers curled around the edge of the desk behind him as he leaned against it, and he dragged his tongue across dry lips. "Why? There has to be a reason. You don't just decide you can't be with somebody. I know you love me, Amelia."

She laughed again, a quiet, breathy sound. "Joseph, it's been ten years since I've seen you. I didn't know if you were ever coming back. You didn't leave a note, you didn't call, you didn't write. I thought you were dead."

"You're a witch, aren't you? Couldn't you scry or something to find that out?" He winced; his tone was more bitter and biting than he'd intended, and he bit his lip.

She frowned and shook her head. "Joseph, can't you just leave it? I'm not going with you. I don't want to be turned."

She moved to walk away from him, turning her back to him, and then gasped as something vise-like clamped onto her arm. She glanced down to see his hand and her eyes darted along his arm, narrowing as their gazes met. "Let me go, Joseph."

"Not until you tell me why you don't want to go with me," he growled, glaring.

She hesitated, catching her bottom lip between her teeth and looking at him with an uncertain gaze. "I-"

He lifted his eyebrows, giving her an expectant look. "You...?"

Furrowing her brow, she glared at him. "I'm pregnant, all right? Besides, if you turned me, I'd lose my magic, and that's more important to me than anything."

His hand dropped away from her and he took a staggering step back, staring at her with wide eyes. He continued backing away, sidestepping around the desk, still just staring at her.

She pressed her lips together. "Joseph, say something." She blinked as he shook his head, and in the next instant, he was gone in a blur of movement. "Joseph!"

I went back to see her in 1971, I believe it was, hoping to apologize for my rude behavior, but her grandson kindly informed me that she'd died five years earlier. I regret not getting to say goodbye.
